The key here, is they did not fly over the entire continent, from one side to the other, "under the globe". They just skirted the coastline, and then turned back toward New Zealand.

Unfortunately, I do not have an unobstucted view of the sun at sunrise or sunset, from my backyard where I do my viewing. Perhaps at some point, I will be able to set up my telescope in a place where I have a view of the sun when it is low on the horizon.

Paul, So I watched the vid you linked, but I am confused. I saw a lot of footage of people building what look to be jet engines, but the video doesn't explain how these compressed air turbine engines actually work. How are they powered and how are they able to motivate a vehicle through atmosphere? ...
