The key here, is they did not fly over the entire continent, from one side to the other, "under the globe". They just skirted the coastline, and then turned back toward New Zealand.

Unfortunately, I do not have an unobstucted view of the sun at sunrise or sunset, from my backyard where I do my viewing. Perhaps at some point, I will be able to set up my telescope in a place where I have a view of the sun when it is low on the horizon.
